The Bingara Historical Society Museum Complex

The Museum complex comprises several buildings, the main one was originally the Post Office Hotel.  The museum is of slab construction with a puddled iron roof and was constructed from pit sawn and hand adzed locall cypress timber.  Built in 1860, it was occupied continuously until 1970, and was a private home since World War I.

The Post Office Hotel was one of the first 10 buildings in Bingara and comprised 32 rooms, plus stables. Presently it is furnished as a private home.

Other buildings contain extensive photo and gem/rock collections.

Other buildings in the grounds include the relocated Boonda subsidised school and blacksmith shop, where the infamous bushranger ‘Thunderbolt’ regularly had his horse shod.  A substantial collection of various horse-drawn equipment and other farming implements can also be found in the grounds.

The Bingara Museum is the home of the Bingara District Historical Society, which is the guardian of local history.  Members of the Historical Society are all volunteers, therefore set opening times are difficult to maintain. However, you may contact Peter Jones on 0408 601 425 to arrange a visit. If you are in town and the museum is unattended please refer to the contact list near the front door. Someone on the list can meet you at the museum.

The Society can provide assistance with family history research. It is also fortunate in having a significant range of quality publications dealing with the local history and people.  View/order publications.

Facilities include guided tours, shop and toilets, family history research.

Admission: Individual $5 and Families $10.
