Aboriginal remains to return home

May 6, 2017

The remains of the Aboriginal King of Bingara will be repatriated to the triangular piece of land between the Halls Creek and Campbell Bridge across the Gwydir River at Bingara.

Gwydir Shire Council has been working with the Moree Aboriginal Lands Council to organise the repatriation of the remains from a Sydney Museum.

Events associated with the repatriation, including a concert featuring Jessica Mauboy, and an Indigenous Knockout football carnival were mentioned in discussions with the Lands Council, but Council has decided those events should not be held, due to the lack of available financial information, infrastructure and insurances associated with a large event.

Council has also received advice from the Police regarding the availability of Police in a timely manner if required.

The repatriation, though, will go ahead, at a time to be decided.

Further details about the King of Bingara, how he died, how his remains got to be in a museum, and how long they have been there, will be posted as the information comes to hand
