After 118 years trading, a Bingara icon to change hands

March 24, 2010

Wednesday March 31, marks the last day of the Fay and Hutton families’ ownership of Fay’s of Bingara.

The “BIG Department Store in the Bush!” will, after 118 years and four generations of the Fay family change hands, and Country Fresh Supermarkets, headed by John and Karen Bishton of Barraba, will take over.

More than being “business as usual” at Fays, John and Karen will bring a youthful vigour to the business. From his accountancy background John was involved in the Hasting’s Valley Co-operative in Wauchope before purchasing the IGA Supermarket in Barraba. John and Karen have settled into Barraba and have raised their young family there.

John will manage the Fays store with the senior staff all continuing to provide guidance and all staff offering helpful and personal service.

With the exception of fashion clothing, the Fay’s Department Store structure will continue. As with his Barraba store, the IGA supermarket will be the focal point and John will align Fays with the Barraba IGA and draw supplies from Sydney.

Susan Hutton (nee Fay) will continue to work in the Fays business for the time being, but Manager/Director Rick Hutton will conclude his work at Fays on March 31.  “I have had 22 years at Fays and have enjoyed the rollercoaster ride that has been modern retailing,” Rick said.

“The introduction of IGA, the extension of trade to seven days, and the growth of our sales and our staff numbers, especially through our support of the school based Retail Trainee Program, have been the highlights for me,” he said.

“The Fay and Hutton families wish the Bishton family every success with their new venture, and I invite our Fay’s customers to meet and greet John and Karen and support the ‘BIG Department Store in the Bush’ on its new journey,” Rick concluded.
