Award winning Falcons on show

May 3, 2008

18 Award-winning GT Falcons will be in Bingara for the weekend of May 3-4.

The run named the ‘Lester Cox Memorial Run’ is a combined run between the Inverell RSM GT Falcon Owners & Enthusiasts Club and the Hunter GT Falcon Club. The cars will be on show to the public from 10 am to lunchtime on Sunday 4th May outside the Roxy Theatre The late Lester Cox, who is well remembered in the Inverell and New England district as a successful grazier, was the main instigator to form the Inverell GT Club in 1990. There was interest in the Inverell district as some Ford enthusiasts had been attending the GT Valla Get Together in 1989 with the Hunter GT Club and also the GT Nationals at Bathurst in 1989.

Stopping for refreshments at the Silverton Hotel, far west NSW.

The new club was named the Inverell RSM GT Falcon Owners & Enthusiasts Club and was formed to fill the need for the preservation, driving and enjoyment of the historic GT Falcon. The Club evolved from a pure GT Owners Club to also cater for Ford enthusiasts with many members owning very desirable and interesting historic Ford cars including GS Falcons, original and modified Falcons, Fairlanes, Mustangs, Falcon 500s and Utes, many of which are on display at the Inverell Transport Museum. One of the benefits of joining the GT Club is the help you receive with accurate restoration and information about obtaining genuine and reproduction parts. The value of GT Falcons has increased ten times or more since the inception of the club.

The Inverell club has gone from strength to strength with members from Inverell, Bingara, Gravesend, Moree, Narrabri, Armidale, Guyra, Glen Innes and the North Coast. The Club meets monthly and has monthly social runs. Members also attend car shows all over Australia.

Inverell cars have won major awards at the Nationals over the years since inception of the Club. Five cars from the Inverell Club attended the 2007 GT Nationals in Perth driving over and back across the Nullarbor.

Lester, as well as instigating the formation of the Inverell Club had great pleasure in driving and showing his immaculate and restored Gold XR GT Falcon and white XW GT Falcon at car shows, GT Nationals and the ‘May Combined Run’ with the Hunter GT Club.

So it was fitting that the annual ‘May Combined Run’, which Lester started, should be renamed after the May run in 2004, the ‘Lester Cox Memorial Run’ in his honour and to be held on the first Sunday in May each year. This run, over the years, has visited Tamworth, Bendemeer, Nundle, Werris Creek, Quirindi, Muswellbrook, Singleton, Armidale and Inverell. This year the run will be to Bingara and next year it is planned that the run will be held in the Hunter region.

The Inverell GT Club always welcomes new members – If interested please talk to any member of the club.
