Bingara invited to become an Intentional Innovation Community (IIC)

August 12, 2011

The northern NSW town of Bingara has been invited to participate in an exciting program to further the processes of innovation within its community.

Following an approach by Darren Keegan, Business Development Manager – Northern Inland, NSW Office of Trade, Business and Industry to Bingara and District VISION 2020, an opportunity has arisen to host a workshop at the Roxy Theatre on the morning of Sunday, August 21. All interested community members are welcome to attend.

The program, “UNISON idea development”, will commence at 9:00am in the Roxy Conference Room and conclude at 12:00noon. The session is supported by Gwydir Shire Council and will be hosted by VISION 2020.

The workshop will be chaired by Dr Philip Thomas from UNE. Philip’s diverse background includes 20 years research into multidisciplinary projects involving farmers, support industries and scientists, in international collaborative research and development.

Also attending will be Professor Ted Alter from Penn State University, USA. Ted is Professor of Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Economics at Penn State. Ted’s interests include agribusiness economics, community and regional economics and leadership in organizational change. Darren Keegan and Peter Sniekers from NSW DTIRIS will also be participating.

The workshops invite community members to contribute to and participate in the identification and realization of a strategy for innovation intended to:

  • Empower and reward individual creativity and ingenuity
  • Harness and direct local expertise into collective action
  • Create useful things
  • Improve and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the region.

Dr Philip Thomas said, “This is an opportunity to be involved in the evolution of a functional environment based on empowerment, trust, collaboration and creativity, that has the sole purpose of improving the “deal flow” that produces innovation.”

Morning tea will be provided and, for catering purposes, intending participants are asked to RSVP to VISION 2020 President, Rick Hutton on 0428 255380 before Saturday, August 20.
