The Warialda 16’s, including five Bingara lads, Daniel and Matt O’Connor, Andrew Webber, Daniel Rafter and Cameron Fletcher had a hard and gutsy battle against Armidale last Saturday week.
Off to a flying start against a much bigger side, Warialda were first to put points on the board, thanks to Sam Cooper. The game then went from one end of the field to the other, eventually Armidale scoring two quick tries. The 16s regathered, a very determined Rafter crossed over to leave the boys’ 8 to 10 down at half time.
With a quick breather the young men were out into it again. Armidale hammering our line set after set with no result. All our boys put their bodies on the line, including our smallest the Martin twins, Brady and Cale. This is their first year at league, well done!
With the ball in their hands, a couple of backline moves opened up holes, allowing Daniel O’Connor to score, shortly followed by Daniel Rafter again, taking the score to 18 to 10 with 15 minutes to go.
With the clock ticking down and a nervous coach looking on, Armidale scored two late tries, one on the bell to level the score 18 all at full time.
A see-sawing game with great ball running and solid line defende made for a exciting and enjoyable game to watch.
At the moment we rely on 14s to make up numbers, with a couple of extra 16s we could possibly win the final. The talent shown by the Bingara boys’ combined with Warialda proves to be a side worth following. Thanks to 14’s Matt McRae and Ben Jones for stepping up again.
