Young Citizen of the Year is Stephen Williams, organiser of the Givin’ Back concert, and volunteer in several fields. Givin’ Back was a truly unforgettable event, instigated by a young man so passionate about his local community. Stephen’s wish was to acknowledge the senior citizens within the community and their contribution over the years.
His efforts involved huge amounts of time and personal commitment whilst pursuing his school studies and dance classes. Stephen is a very popular young face around the Touriandi Aged Care facility, having provided entertainment for the residents on a number of occasions. Several months ago, Stephen applied to undertake his Years 11 and 12 at Newtown Performing Arts School in Sydney.
Over 800 teenagers auditioned, with only 50 places being offered for the performing Arts 2009. Stephen was offered a position to study dance in the first round of appointments, a truly remarkable achievement.
"I would like to thank Bingara for all the opportunities you have given me," Stephen said, accepting the award. "Unfortunately, I can’t go any further here, but one day I will definitely come back."
Gwydol audience were treated to a dance performance by Stephen who took part in the Gwydol competition.
Stephen is already sorely missed in the Bingara area, but he has settled in remarkably well in his new school and is thriving. One day Bingara residents will be able to say, "I knew Stephen when…"
Stephen is destined for great things and Bingara wishes him well.
