Breedplan figures inspire vote of confidence in (Courallie J) Chairman

Long time purchasers of Courallie bulls, Peter and Margaret Turner bought the top priced bull at the Courallie J Herefords sale last Friday week.

Paying $9,500 for the two year old bull, Courallie J Chairman, Mr Turner said he was impressed by the bull’s Breedplan figures and his breeding, along with the fact that his wife, Margaret, liked him.

Mr Turner owns a family run mixed farming enterprise west of Gurley. He runs a straight Hereford herd, fattening steers on oats when the season permits, to sell at the saleyards. Mr and Mrs Turner bought a Courallie J Herefords bull last year at the Hann family’s inaugural on property sale.

Stud Principal, Jim Hann said that this year’s sale saw the better bulls selling very well, the top priced bull bringing more money than last year. He also commented that there was increased interest in the Breedplan EBVs which was good.

Mr Hann was disappointed at the clearance rate however, saying “I think the bulls were good enough” but conceding that some could have been fatter.

With 25 bulls sold out of a draft of 38, averaging $3750, Mr Hann said that a lot of the good herd bulls did not sell. “We might have to reconsider what we do with the herd bulls,” he said.

There was a good mix of local and away buyers, many of whom have purchased Courallie bulls for many years.
