Calling for nominations – Vocational Education and Business Awards

September 28, 2015

Nominations are now open for the 2015 Gwydir Vocational Education and Business Awards.  Now in its 20th year the awards aim to celebrate the achievements of local Vocational Education students and businesses throughout the shire.

This year’s awards will differ slightly from previous years; in the past Bingara and Warialda were judged in two separate categories.

This year all businesses in the shire will be judged together in an effort to make the awards more inclusive of businesses in the smaller surrounding villages.

“There were a number of reasons for changing the format of the awards” said Georgia Standerwick Economic Development Officer for Gwydir Shire Council.

“In the past we seemed to have a lot of repeat winners, this way we can broaden the reach and open up the competition.  A lot of people shop in both towns as well as the smaller villages, so it made sense to have one region category”.

The awards are broken up into five categories Senior Employee/ Proprietor 21 and Over, Junior Employee Under 21, Small Business (5 employees or less), Large Business (5 or more) and Farm – Most Sustainable or Innovative. The nominees will be judged on a number of areas including customer service and product knowledge.

The Farming award sponsored by the Northern Slopes Landcare is a new addition to this year’s competition and aims to recognise farmers that are using sustainable or innovative practices to grow their business.

“We are really hoping that locals will show support for their favorite local businesses and nominate them for the awards” said Georgia.

Nomination forms can be picked up from the Warialda and Bingara Newsagency as well as the Bingara and Warialda Council Offices.

Nominations close November 1.

The awards night will be held on Friday November 27 at the Town Hall in Warialda.
