Copeton Dam is to be upgraded for a 1 in 1000 year flood.

Councillor Peter Pankhurst reported to the last meeting of Gwydir Shire Council, held recently in Bingara, that the Northcott Centre will have to be moved along with other recreational facilities and key infrastructure, prior to construction work in 2010.

Alan Kerr, Manager of Engineering Services said that maintaining the integrity of the dam wall is of the highest priority in the theoretically possible, but unlikely event.

The dam safety upgrade project proposed by State Water is centred within the boundaries of Copeton State Park at Diamond Bay. The major works proposed include the construction of a 250 metre wide by 14 metre deep channel through Diamond Bay and the construction of a “fuse plug” structure within the channel.
