DISCOVER GWYDIR off to a brilliant start.

February 24, 2009

Like the gemstones that abound within the Gwydir Shire, many sparkling ideas came from the very pleasing attendance of 80 people, from across the Shire, at the DISCOVER GWYDIR Forum, on Thursday Feb 19.

The audience included a bus load from Warialda, with other visitors coming from as far afield as Croppa Creek, Yallaroi, Upper Horton, Gravesend and Rocky Creek.

“It was great to have four GSC Councillors and several GSC staff attending, and several guests who had only recently moved to the Shire,” said Vision 20/20 President, Rick Hutton.

National Parks’ representative, Rebecca Smith briefly outlined their Discovery Program as it currently operates on the New England parks and gave notice of Frog Dreaming  an Ecology awareness program for young people to be held in Bingara later this year.

Geologist, Bob Brown gave an excellent presentation on the geological origins of the Bingara-Warialda region. How he managed in 45 minutes to cover 450 million years, was amazing.

After supper, the group participated in the DISCOVER GWYDIR WEB. The DISCOVER GWYDIR WEB was an active, and interactive, exercise to collect and consider many aspects of recreation and tourism within Gwydir Shire. Many wonderful ideas were offered. These will be sorted within the next two weeks ready to be presented at the next stage.

The second DISCOVER GWYDIR Forum will be held in Warialda within two months. It will follow on, expand and prioritise, the ideas gained from the Bingara Forum.

The organizing committee, sincerely thank, Gwydir Shire Council, for its support, and those who helped to present the evening as well as all who attended.
