One Warialda local has made the discovery of a lifetime, coming across an albino echidna just outside of town.
Jason Smith discovered the pale critter on Friday evening as he returned home from a trip into town. At the time of the discovery, the echidna was making its way across the Mosquito Creek Road, a risky journey for even the quickest of creatures.
“He was just crossing the road, it is pretty lucky we found him as a lot of trucks head out that way,” Mr Smith said.
Mr Smith’s find is one for the history books, with information suggesting that this is a 1 in 10,000 occurrence.
“I feel like I’ve won the lottery,” Jason said. “I’ve been around for 47 years and I have never seen anything like this in my life.
“I have spoken to a 90 year old woman as well and she said she has never heard of anything like this either,” he said.
The echidna was taken away from the road, to ensure it would not fall victim to other vehicles during the night. And while the echidna has since packed up and moved on, he will not be forgotten in the Smith family.
“I showed the photos to my grandson Tommy and he has named him ‘Dino the Albino’,” Jason said.
