North West Film Club announces program for 2017

December 18, 2016

The North West Theatre Company Film Club has announced an imposing program of films for their 2017 program, with a very well balanced collection of dramas, comedies, the old, the new and the interesting.

President John Wearne told the Advocate that the strength of the program lies in its variety. “There is something for everyone, with old classics such as ‘Blazing Saddles’ and ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ meeting more modern works like ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and the hilarious black comedy ‘Death at a Funeral’.

Two particularly intriguing movies are Norwegian/German spy thriller ‘Two Lives’, and ‘Wah Wah’, which covers the final days of British colonial rule in Swaziland through the eyes of a young Richard E. Grant”.

The Film Club has been operating since the middle of 2011, and in that time has screened more than 60 films stretching back to 1921 and Charlie Chaplin. Each year more than 30 members and visitors meet at 4pm on the last Sunday of each month to see a specially introduced movie and to stay, if they wish, for a wine and snack afterwards.

The full program for 2017 is as follows:

  • Sunday 26th February – ‘LAWRENCE OF ARABIA’ – an all time great with 7 Academy Awards.
  • Sunday 26th March – ‘DEATH AT A FUNERAL’ – an outrageous British black comedy
  • Sunday 30th April – ‘TWO LIVES’ – espionage drama set in Norway, with English subtitles.
  • Sunday 28th May – ‘HUGO’ – a favourite for the whole family, and nominated for 11 Oscars.

Membership of the Film Club represents great value, and fees are intended only to cover the cost of distributor rights and advertising. The annual membership fee remains unchanged since 2011 at $60 – which works out at less than $6 per movie.

Why not consider membership as a Christmas present? Gift vouchers are available. Any membership enquiries for 2017 can be directed to either John Wearne (0418 419 684) or Jen Mead at the Bingara Visitor Information Centre (02 6724 0066).

The club also has a range of films available to lend at no cost to members – an additional bonus which membership brings.

John Wearne points to the success and popularity that the Film Club enjoys. “Where else would you want to be at 4pm on the last Sunday of each month than the iconic Roxy Theatre?” he said. “Amazing movies, warm in winter and cool in summer – it’s a no-brainer really!

I also want to thank our members and the steady flow of tourists and visitors for their support during 2016”, he added.
