Foreshore camping permitted in Bingara

April 1, 2020

This week’s “From the Mayor’s Desk” in the Gwydir News has bad news for shire caravan parks, but good news for those who wish to camp along the foreshore of the Gwydir River.  Here is the article which appeared in Vol. 3. No. 11, April 1, 2020.

“As a local government authority, Gwydir Shire Council fully endorses the directions being given by the Prime Minister with regard to social distancing, in particular the new direction that no more than two people should gather in a public place.

“My fellow Councillors and I also implore you to remain in your homes wherever possible.

“Last Thursday the NSW Government issued a Notice that local government caravan parks must close. Accordingly the Bingara Caravan Park, Warialda Caravan Park and Cranky Rock Recreation Reserve closed to travellers. The Bingara and Warialda Caravan Parks’ shower and laundry facilities will no longer be available to the public.

“This Notice does not apply to the free camping along the foreshore at Bingara. This is because the Council does not provide any shared amenities to these travellers.

“The Council supports these visitors to our Shire and there is no reason to think that they place us in any more danger from infection. They play a very important role in our local economy.

“If we all practice the recommendations we might be successful in keeping Coronavirus out of Gwydir Shire.”
