Freshwater Swim

May 10, 2013

Buoyed by the success of the inaugural Gwydir Shire Copeton Freshwater Swim, the organising committee has already claimed the date for next year’s event.

Saturday April 26, 2014, has been set down for the “The Swim with Altitude” and one new event has been added to the program.

For those finding the 600 metres and two kilometres events too short, a five kilometre event has been added.

To put it in perspective, that is 100 laps of a 50 metre pool, only tougher because there are no lane ropes and it is open water.

Committee spokesman Gary Lamrock says following this month’s event, 98 swimmers were given survey forms, and 68 rated the event and organisation as outstanding and would return.

“One entrant said he had done 28 events this year, and none were better than Copeton.
The major sponsor, Gwydir Shire Council, said it had fielded inquiries in its visitors centre from people who had travelled into the area for the swim.

Yamba Surf Lifesaving Club have already committed to the water safety role again.

Overall the committee was extremely pleased with how the day went, but like all such things, have reviewed various aspects and plan to make it even better.
