Gwydir Art Show in its 13th year

July 30, 2010

The Gwydir Art Show will again be held this year in October. This will be the 13th year of the show, which was first held in 1996. (A show was not held in 2008 due to the motorhome rally.)

The schedules will be printed this week and made available to artists over a large area including the Central West, the Darling Downs and the Sunshine Coast as well as locally.

Co-ordinator of the show, Mrs Robin Hansen said she is hopeful that Australian Artist of the Year, David Lake will again exhibit some of his works, as he has done on more than one occasion in the past. Mr Lake, who lives at Newbridge in the Central Tablelands, was named the Combined Art Societies of Sydney’s Artist of the Year for the last three years. Mr Lake is an oil painter of the Australian landscape whose paintings hang in galleries around Australia, as well as in private collections around the world.

There will also be works by Brett Jones from Hervey Bay and Keith Blake from the Sunshine Coast.

Painted Jeans is a new section which has been introduced this year to the art show. The Just Jeans store inTamworth is sponsoring two prizes of $50 for the winning pair of painted jeans and the winning pair of decorated jeans. There will also be a junior section for the best decorated or painted pair of jeans, sponsored by Robyn Jones’ Craft Cottage.

Gwydir Shire Council will again be supporting the art show with an acquisitive section which carries a prize of $2000.

Profits this year will go to Bosom Buddies, which is a locally administered trust fund that assists with small cash payments to patients who incur travelling costs to receive medical treatment. This is a departure from previous years, which saw funds raised going to the Anglican Church in Bingara.
