Gwydir League kicks off with a win

March 6, 2013

Gwydir League continued its’ steady progress towards the first competition game with an encouraging 20 – 16 win over the Dungowan Cowboys.

While it was nice to finish in front, the important thing for Coaches Peter Stevens and Mick Wade was to try as many different combinations as possible and to give all players plenty of game time. In all these aspects the trial was a huge success with both well satisfied with the progress so far.

Try scorers were Mitchell Porter (3) and Todd Simpson (2). For Dungowan Ashley Swan, Damien Pitman, Ben Tongue and Justin Fox scored.

Goals were not attempted. Twenty six trialled for Gwydir and the Club now has in excess of thirty players signed plus some handy first graders in the pipeline.

However now that the firsts and reserve grades are assured, it is to find enough under 18 years’ and league tag players to enter squads in the competition. Anyone interested may phone or text the coaches, Stuart Dixon (0428 600 863) Matt Cleal (0429 181 937) or Wayne Ford (0429 955 796)

The next challenge is to prepare for the Group 19 launch at Glen Innes on Saturday, March 23 and the Club would appreciate as many supporters as possible to make the trip.

This will be the first real test and the round robin will put all First Division Clubs on display. It will be a great day out and sure to provide some great footie.

First division football is a new experience for many of the Bingara and Warialda locals however they will have plenty of fire power backing them up.

The Club is currently processing clearances for some very talented players and they include; Mitch Porter, Robert Dunn, Darren MacGregor (Inverell), Todd Simpson, Ashley Churchland, Jason Hobday (Moree), Rhys Aleckson (Dungowan) and brothers, Adam and Aaron Rodilossi (Goondiwindi).

A peak of 50 senior players is expected to be signed for first and reserve grade and this number is rapidly approaching. Therefore the Club is keen to ensure that all local Bingara or Warialda players are given all opportunity to come to training and get on board and enjoy what is developing as a very exciting experience.

Shortly, club officials will publish the names of the 2012 Bullets and Wombats that have registered and are training.
