February 10, 2015

During the recent Australia Day Ceremony at the museum, Deputy Mayor Catherine Egan made a special presentaion to the Historical Society – a historic piece of World War 1 memorabilia.

“Mrs Jean Robinson, a thirty three year member of the Historical Society, and community member Nancy MacInnes brought the piece of cloth to the attention of the Gwydir Shire Council,” said Cr Catherine.  [Find our more about the cloth…]

The council then went ahead undertook the framing of the cloth to preserve the integrity of the historical item of the Bingara and District war effort.

“It is unknown who made the donation to the Historical Society but if anyone can shed light on the cloth and its origins, the Society would greatly appreciate it.

“Another light piece of trivia passed on to me was that you signed your intention in pencil and only after payment was received was your name confirmed in Indian ink!

“It is my pleasure to return this wonderful piece of history back to the Historical Society for safe keeping,” Cr Catherine concluded.
