In search of Landcare’s champions!

May 20, 2009

The peak body for Landcare in the North of the State, the New England North West Network Chairs is on the lookout for local ‘Landcare Champions’ for the Landcare and Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA Regional Awards.  Nominations are now open and will close on Friday June 5 2009.

This is the second time the Landcare and Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA Regional Awards have been held in the Border Rivers-Gwydir Catchment Management Authority area.

“We’re seeking individuals and groups who are making a real difference to our environment” explained NE NW Network Chairs Co-ordinator Fiona Adams.  “The awards are being run in conjunction with the Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA, and the categories are for local government, primary producers, education providers, indigenous groups, individuals, community groups as well as new categories for young Landcarers and urban Landcare projects” , she said.

Past winner of the Regional Landcare Awards Education category, Shirley Handy, believes the event is also an opportunity to inspire and motivate others within the community.  “It’s a thank you to the volunteers of Landcare and in my case, it was a total boost to my project”, Shirley said.  “It’s about providing support and recognition where it’s needed most. Many of us may wonder ‘what am I doing this for’, but the award was an enormous shot in the arm for my conservation education project”, she explained.

The 2009 Regional Landcare Awards in Border Rivers-Gwydir aim to take the Landcare and natural resource management message to the wider community and showcase the wonderful projects that are taking place across the region.

Nominations for the Regional Landcare Awards close on Friday June 5, 2009 and those interested should contact the local Landcare office or head to the Border Rivers Gwydir CMA website www.brg.cma.nsw.gov.au
