Jason Lewis to coach Gwydir River Rats for the 2012 season

November 24, 2011

Jason Lewis will coach the Gwydir River Rats for the 2012 season.  Jason played for the Rats last year and was an integral part of the team that surprised everyone and made it into the Grand Final.

Jason Lewis & Brownie Left:  Number 12 player from this successful union season, Jason Lewis is the new coach for the 2012 season.

“The disappointment of that loss is still fresh in every player and supporter’s mind, and next season will see a concerted effort to change that result around,” Gwydir Rugby Club President, Tex Wright, said.

“The River Rats expect to retain a large majority of that team and with Jason as coach along with the assistance of some well known grade players (who can not be named at present) we look forward to a great year.”

Jason brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with him to take on this challenging role which was left vacant with the transfer of Jared Fuller to Kempsey. “We are aware that a Bingara/Pallamallawa combined league team are trying to get up and going next season and this may draw some of our players away, however, I feel that most who played with us last season will continue this season to finish the job,” Tex said.

Gwydir Rugby Club officials attended the New England Rugby Annual General Meeting on Monday night at Armidale, and were made very welcome.  “This is a competition that is still growing and will do all in its power to assist a fledgling club such as our own,” Tex said.

“The ARU representative Terry Woodward was there and they are really pushing for women’s Rugby to get started this year. “This is something that the Gwydir Club will support as there are several women interested in having a game. “Nothing has been finalised at this stage and we will have to wait and see what the executive committee come up with.”

The 2012 season is just around the corner and Tex is confident the River Rats will be able to ‘hit the ground running’ this season.

Talks are underway with Barraba Rugby Club to play a trial in 2012 with the inaugural Bingara/Barraba Plate. The Armidale Knockout and one or two other trial games should give the Gwydir  players an ideal start to the season.
