Kyle’s winning catch joins cod breeding program

May 6, 2011

Kyle Miller reckons he has been trying to catch his winning cod for 19½ years.  The young Bingara man was delighted with his win, and donated his fish to the Bingara Hatchery breeding program.

Kyle and friend, Blake Fletcher caught a lotal of 38 cod over the weekend, but only three were big enough to weigh in.

Fishing from his kayak, Kyle said he used just one lure all weekend.  “I caught 22 cod over the weekend,” Kyle said.

“The winning fish was 83 cm, one was 63 cm, the rest went back in the river.”

Blake Fletcher won the award for the biggest yellowbelly caught, and both Blake and Kyle donated their yellowbelly catch to the hatchery breeding program.

Organisers of the Bingara Anglers Club annual Easterfish competition have deemed the weekend a success.

Anglers Club President, Andy Calloway, said 176 entries were received.  “It was a good turnout, although down a bit on last year,” he said.  He said the extra-long weekend may have contributed to this.

“There was a good crowd for presentation, everyone had a good weekend, thanks to the committee and everyone who helped.  “A lot of small fish were caught and released, so the future is looking bright for the river,” Andy said.

He thanked the sponsors of the event, and paid tribute to the work done by the Pallamallawa Fishing Club members who man the weigh station at Copeton Dam, and give tremendous support to the Bingara Club both helping run Easterfish, and by taking part in the competititon.

The popular raffle saw the first prize of a boat go to Frances Ford of Warialda. The kayak was won by D. Shearer, while Ron Warby won the whipper snipper.

According to the tally board at the Hatchery, 10 cod were weighed in, 14 yellowbelly, 38 carp, and 94 catfish. Andy said the number of catfish caught at Copeton dam was well over that figure, as 94 had been posted the night before.

An Easter basket raffle saw $205.45 donated to the cancer council.
