Myall Creek book under the spotlight

June 2, 2008

A book about the Myall Creek massacre and events leading up to and following the crime will be discussed on "The First Tuesday Book Club" on ABC television tomorrow night (Tuesday, June 3).

Demons at Dusk by Peter Stewart, is set in the Myall Creek area around the time of the 1839 massacre.  The author regularly attends the annual Myall Creek Memorial ceremony, held on the June long weekend each year.

"In the early years of Australian colonisation Aboriginal lands are being seized through force and power," First Tuesday Book Club promotion states.

"Death stalks the countryside in the shape of white men. People are murdered to make way for sheep and cattle. Fear and desperation has driven the Waiararie tribe to seek refuge at the Myall Creek station where convict labourers and stockmen struggle as strangers in a land far from home. Connections form between the two peoples and when Death visits Myall Creek not everybody will allow fear and greed to get in the way of the truth."

A panel will review the book on the television program.
