Over the years, the North Star Trail Ride has grown to be one of the most popular sporting events in the region. The North Star Trail Ride is an annual non-competitive, off road event in which participants ride motorbikes on a number of courses, varying in length and difficulty.
The event has grown dramatically, with around 1500 riders taking part in 2014.
“We started off our first year with 66 riders and not much idea,” organiser John Mills said. “It’s growing more and more each year. Last year we had 1500 riders and about 2000 people in camp.”
The event is now in its 10th year and is well known across the region. “There is a course for everyone and we really just want everyone to have fun,” John said.
There are several ‘loops’ on offer, ranging from roughly 80 kilometres down to a course for the ‘pee-wees’ that is no more than 500 metres. For those not wanting to attempt the 80km, there are courses of 40km, 20km, roughly 8km and one course that is only 1-2km in length.
“You can begin on whichever course you like, and upgrade as you get better,” John said.
“We even invite kids with training wheels, and hope that by the end of the day they can take the training wheels off.”
The event is designed to be challenging, yet fun for all.
Aside from the actual riding, the camping is a major drawcard for many punters, as it is a chance to catch up with friends, and enjoy a few nights in the small North Star community with likeminded riders and supporters.
This year, the organising committee hope to incorporate a trade show into the event, with vendors from camping and outdoor stores setting up stalls for the riders and others present.
For those that arrive on the day and realise they forgot all of their camping chairs – this may be helpful for you!
With just two and a half weeks before the big event, organisers are urging potential participants to go online and print off registration forms to ensure they are prepared.
Forms can be found at http://www. northstartrailride.com and can be filled out and brought along on the day with the entry fee.
All are invited to take part in the weekend’s activities, with all required safety gear and a mechanically sound motorcycle.
The event is held at the North Star Sporting Club and entertainment and meals will be available at the club of an evening.
Participants are welcome to begin arriving from Thursday afternoon, with registration beginning on Friday. For further information, visit www.northstartrailride.com or visit North Star Trail Ride Facebook Page.
