Nurses past and present to celebrate International Nurses’ Day

May 8, 2008

Bingara nurses, past and present, are invited to International Nurses’ Day ‘Brunch on the Verandah’ on May 12, which will be the last celebration of its kind to be held in the current Bingara Hospital.

International Nurses’ Day is celebrated around the world on 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

This year the theme is “Delivering Quality, Serving Communities: Nurses Leading Primary Health Care” which Bingara Community Nurse Sharon Price says is fantastic recognition of what community nurses do every day.
“Community nurses are often the first line of health care for members of the community who have a chronic illness, a wound that isn’t healing properly, or needing palliative care.

We work closely with other primary health care providers, such as doctors and HACC, to make sure our clients’ needs are met in the most effective way.
“Community nurses become like a ‘Jack of all trades’ when it comes to health care. We are trained to look for things that affect the health of the whole patient – whether this is a medical problem, or even a social or transported related problem – we can help to get the right people involved to sort it out.

“In serving the community, we work very hard to help people better manage their own health problems. Sometimes this takes the form of community education, sometimes one-to-one appointments, and sometimes its running groups that will put people in touch with other community members who are keen to learn about a particular topic.

“It’s a very rewarding career and I’d love to see as many nurses as possible at the Brunch on the Verandah,” she said.  The “Brunch on the Verandah” starts at 11am on May 12. “It will be the final opportunity for nurses to gather for International Nurse Day at the present Bingara Hospital before the building is demolished.  “It will be a great time for us to celebrate our career and reminisce of days gone by,” Sharon said.

Please notify Bingara Community Health Centre of your attendance for catering purposes by Wednesday May 7.
