School News: August 21, 2008 (Week 5, Term 3)

August 25, 2008

On Tuesday evening last week, representatives from the Gwydir Industry Education Links Committee met at the Bingara School Library.

It was a very informative meeting with the main focus being on what’s been happening for the students at their work placement, locally and in Tamworth; what’s been happening in terms of  traineeships and apprenticeships; and progress reports on the upcoming Presentation Dinner on the 19th September held at the Roxy.

Last Wednesday 13th August, Stuart Hornery and Lynette Mayne visited Bingara Central School with a view to examining the workings of the Gwydir Learning Region and the effectiveness of the various aspects of the GLR. Indeed, Stuart and Lynette were here to examine the operation of best practice in Bingara and Warialda and the rest of the GLR schools. The GLR is seen as the best example of a Learning Region in the state.

Stuart Hornery and Lynette Mayne have a great deal of business experience and were interested to observe the workings of the GLR. Stuart was awarded an AO in 1988 and was named ABM Businessman of the Year.    Lynette has over 25 years international business experience and hold’s a PM’s Centenary Award for leadership in Industry.

While visiting, Stuart and Lynette were treated to a video overview of the GLR at the Roxy. After this they spoke freely to staff and students about the courses they undertake and their effects.

At lunch Stuart and Lynette shared lunch with Mr Ben Wright and some students, courtesy of food prepared by the Year 9 Food Technology class.

Indeed, after leaving the school Stuart and Lynette visited the TVET Auto Class and visited employers, IGA and Touriandi Lodge. The next day was spent at Warialda High School and township.

It was great to have these visitors in the schools and communities and they seemed very positive about the GLR. We look forward to their feedback soon.
