School News: February 14, 2008 (Week 4, Term 1)

SWIMMING SUCCESS: Last Thursday our school held the annual swimming carnival at the Bingara Swimming Pool with Fraser successfully defending their title again. The day was characterised by beautiful weather that set the scene for a wonderful event.

There were a number of students who had standout performances with several records broken. Let’s congratulate all our age group champions. Many of our students who were successful at our school swimming carnival will now head off to the next round of zone swimming carnivals where I am sure they will be very competitive.

It is important to highlight the way all our students competed and the spirit that they showed. There are not too many schools around who have the rate of student attendance at such an event as we do here in Bingara. That fact alone is something that we should be proud of but as I say the way that the students showed great team spirit was commendable.

Let’s also take the opportunity to congratulate all the staff involved in the carnival organisation. Thanks are also extended to Shaun, Chris and the staff who run the swimming pool, the Cancer Council who supplied much needed sunscreen, the many wonderful parent helpers who supported the carnival and the Gwydir Shire Council.

It was without doubt a carnival that will go down as a highlight of the 2008 school year. I congratulate all those people who were involved.

SUPPORTING PARENTS
As we are all aware, home study is a very important part of your child’s education. Our school as a result of its involvement in the Country Area Program (CAP) is able to offer two fantastic opportunities for parents to help them support their children at home.

The CAP program is offering a course titled Literacy for Parents and this course will be offered in Moree on Friday 28th March 2008. Another course titled Numeracy for Parents will also be offered in Moree and will be held on Friday 30th May 2008. These will be two fantastic opportunities for parents to develop more strategies in order to help their children with the most fundamental of skills in literacy and numeracy.

In addition to the above two courses, the school is also able to offer through the CAP program a course for parents in using interactive whiteboards. Most people would be aware that our school has four interactive whiteboards and they are increasing in their usage in the classroom.

The course being offered will allow parents to develop a greater understanding of how this technology can be used to support students in their learning. This course will be offered at Warialda Public School on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 February.

More information about these courses will be sent home with students and if you are interested please keep an eye out for the registration information.

GETTING INVOLVED
Can I remind parents that they are more than welcome to get involved in our school by attending weekly assemblies. Our Primary assembly is held on Wednesdays at 12.40pm. And our secondary assemblies are held at regular times during the school term. These assemblies present a great chance to see what the students have been up to as well as see many of our students receive various awards.
