School tradition marches on

Bingara Central School is the only one we know of in New South Wales that maintains a tradition of starting the school’s annual sports carnival with a march which requires the closure of some streets.

Bingara Central School march for Thomson Cup 2100

The annual Thomson Cup sports day was held last Friday week, beginning with the traditional march starting from the Central School. The students and staff made their way along Finch Street, up Maitland Street, turning into Cunningham Street, and ending when they arrived at Gwydir Oval for the day’s events.

Secret judges were appointed to take note of how the children, and their teachers, marched. Points were also given for presentation. Each of the three houses adopts a theme. This year, we saw Bradman Bongos, Fraser Frontline and LeCrazy Laver vying for attention from the judges. This year, the Bradman Bongos blitzed the other two houses for marching honours, although Fraser won overall points on the day.
