Short list for Council projects

December 15, 2008

The Community Services and Planning Committee has come up with a short list of projects which it has recommended council adopt to spend the $352,000 granted by the Rudd Government to fund infrastructure development for local government.

At a meeting held last Friday in Warialda, the committee considered a number of suggestions, some of which had been submitted by the public.

After lengthy discussion, the committee agreed that the following projects be recommeded for funding:

The enhancement of the proposed Tourist Information Centre at Warialda to the value of $200,000. An upgrade of the playground at Upper Horton to the value of $4,000. An upgrade of the park adjacent to the Hall in Gravesend for $5,000. Playground and park improvements at North Star for $15,000 and development of the Roxy Cafe in Bingara with $128,000 allocated.

This recommendation will be considered by council at its next meeting, which will be held in Bingara on December 18.

The General Manager stated that "It is hoped that this allocation of funds will not be a "flash in the pan" but will form the basis of a coherent on-going funding source for local government to address the serious funding shortfall experienced by local government bodies around Australia. Projects that are not funded in this round could be reconsidered in future rounds.
