Six Million Dollar Road Grant

May 18, 2007

The Federal Government has announced the allocation of SIX MILLION DOLLARS to see the complete sealing of the road from Bingara to Coonamble via Narrabri and Piliga.

This is a great outcome for Bingara and District and for the whole Gwydir Shire. The Narrabri Road provides the shortest road journey from Melbourne to Brisbane by some 45 km. It will enable travelers from the Central West of NSW as well as those from Victoria to take the scenic option via Killarney Gap through Mount Kaputar National Park, along Rocky Creek, across the Horton Valley and the Benbraggie Hills and on into Bingara. From Bingara the options are north through Warialda, Yetman and Texas on to the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, or north east to Inverell and Glen Innes and the NSW North Coast. All this along sealed, all weather road.

Vision 20/20 has had this outcome as one of its major projects since its inception. The opportunity is a key component of their Vision Document and the GSC’s Strategic Plan for Bingara. Last year Vision 2020 participated in the consultancy review of the road project initiated by Gwydir, Narrabri and Coonamble Shire Councils.

Congratulations and our thanks to GSC Mayor Mark Coulton and his fellow councilors and to GM Max Eastcott and his staff for their persistence and conviction in pursuing this outcome.
