The ‘Toasties’ are back

November 16, 2017

Toastmasters have been around for decades, originally starting in America in 1905. Many of us have heard of them. There’s even a few local Bingara citizens who can vouch for the value of being part of Toastmasters because it once thrived in our town. If you ask Deputy Mayor Catherine Egan, she will tell you that with the support of Toastmasters she has gained skills to carry out her duties more effectively in her public role.

Public speaking is one of the most common fears of humans and can really interfere with our ability to relax and be social.

Good News! Not only will Toastmasters give you an opportunity to smash those fears by having a go in an incredibly supportive environment, but, it will also teach you skills that can be used in all walks of life. These skills could be used in family debates around the dinner table, delivering a speech at your ‘bestie’s’ wedding, chairing work or community meetings, or being able to stand up anywhere and speak with confidence.

Toastmasters has clubs all over the New England, and the members regularly visit other towns for meetings.

It’s not unusual to find yourself sitting in a meeting with members who have a combined experience of many decades! Bruce, nicknamed ‘the Guru’ and our current Secretary travels from Inverell to join the Bingara club each month. I have found his feedback to be extremely valuable in helping me improve my speaking and leadership skills. So, if you want to improve self confidence and leadership skills Toastmasters is equipped and ready to help!

Toastmasters has a wealth of resources and training opportunities that you can access, as well as many enthusiastic and friendly members waiting to support and guide you. Come and check us out!
