Early May 2008 saw Surfers’ Paradise as the venue for the District 69 Convention of Toastmasters, when 245 members from Alice Springs, Cairns to Roma, Grafton, Bingara and all points in between gathered for a very stimulating and entertaining talkfest.
Members were treated to various educational sessions covering subjects like "it’s OK to say no", encouraging members to look at new ideas for their club meetings, listening – a lost art and how to be a successful leader.
The keynote speaker for Saturday afternoon and Monday morning was David Brooks, the 1990 Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking. David is from Texas USA and was very inspiring. Members also had the opportunity to observe the four speech contests of our district.
Kate George from Inverell was certainly well known after the weekend, competing in three of the four contests. Kate was very gratified to gain third in the Evaluation contest especially as she had never been placed at this level before. The Humorous Contest on Saturday night saw Linda McDouall from Bingara making her second appearance at a District final. Linda found humour in shopping and she certainly struck a chord with many in the audience. Linda did not gain a place this year but she was the audience favourite – alas they were not judges on the night!
Linda is already planning her speech for next year’s contest and is considering entering the World Championship of Public Speaking.
