True support for local sporting clubs

July 4, 2010

North West NSW residents can get behind their local participating sports club and help raise much needed funds for their sporting community, when Telstra’s True Supporters program kicks off.

Now in its third year, True Supporters will directly benefit grass roots sporting clubs across Australia by providing financial assistance to local clubs to help purchase  equipment and to provide for developmental opportunities.

Since its inception in 2008, True Supporters has contributed over $350,000 to more than 1,100 sporting clubs and leagues nationally.

From today, local supporters can assist their participating teams with funding by heading into their nearest Telstra store or partner and signing up to an eligible Telstra service.  Locals can then log onto www.telstra.com/truesupporters, nominate their participating club of choice and Telstra will contribute $25 to the participating club.

As Telstra Country Wide celebrates its 10th anniversary, Telstra Area General Manager for North West NSW, Richard Bourne, reaffirmed the importance of programs like True Supporters which help to give back to the communities in which Telstra people live and work.

“The True Supporters program is a great example of how we leverage our national sponsorships of sporting codes and organisations, including the National Rugby League  and Australian Football League to provide real benefits at a local community level,” said Richard.

“Whether it’s a new barbecue at the ground, training equipment for the team, or much needed renovations to the club house, True Supporters helps provide the financial means to make these improvements happen.”

Telstra continues to have a strong focus on developing and nurturing young sporting talent across the country and True Supporters is one of many community programs helping to achieve this.

This year’s True Supporters sees the continued involvement of NRL and AFL codes and the introduction of additional sporting codes and community organisations such as Soccer, Netball and Police and Community Youth Clubs.

Telstra has a long and proud history of supporting regional communities across Australia through a wide range of local sponsorships and initiatives.

Since 2003, Telstra has contributed over $7 million to more than 5,700 junior sporting, swimming and Surf Life Saving clubs through the Telstra Assistance Fund and Telstra’s community foundation, The Telstra Foundation.
