Truth telling important

June 29, 2010

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Paul Lynch spoke at the Myall Creek Massacre Memorial ceremony recently.  He stressed the importance of telling the truth in contemporary Australian history.

My Lynch said, acknowledging the truth was an important part of the identity of Australian people.

"Today is about acknowledging history – what’s happened in the past and it’s also about truth-telling," he said.

Mr Lynch also outlined the NSW Government’s decision to recognise Aboriginal people as the first peoples in New South Wales by amending the State Constitution.

"Constitutional recognition is a positive recognition of Aboriginal people," he said.

"While the sympoblism attached to constitutional recognition is powerful, the Government is equally driven to working with Aboriginal people on a range of programs to close the gap in a range of areas," Mr Lynch said.
