Volunteer of the Year

February 2, 2008

Volunteer of the Year, Ivan Galvin, is the current president of the Bingara Sporting Club, and has been for a number of years.

Volunteer of the Year, Ivan Galvin, who was nominated by Robert
Northcott and Bingara Sporting Club.

Over many years, he has provided countless hours of voluntary work for the club itself and its various sections. This club has survived and prospered over the years only because of people like Ivan, who give great support across the board.

Bingara Sporting Club must be close to unique, in that the upkeep of the golf course, bowling greens and tennis courts is all carried out completely with voluntary labour from its members.

In particular, Ivan and his wife Judy initiated “Barney’s Day” in memory of their son Andrew, who lost his battle with cancer in 1996. This is a charity golf and bowls day, organised and operated solely by Ivan and Judy, which has raised in excess of $30,000 for charity over its 12 years.

Ivan is, and always has been, an asset to Bingara Sporting Club and the Bingara community as a whole. He seeks no praise or recognition of any kind. He is a humble man, driven by love for his family and his community, and is a prime example of what being Australian is all about.
