Independent Member for New England, Tony Windsor, has retained the seat of New England with an increased majority.
The election, held last Saturday, saw the Coalition suffer a huge defeat,and the election of the Labor Party, headed by Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, to government.
With seven seats still to be decided,the ALP has gone from holding 60 to 83 seats, Liberals from 74 to 48, Nationals 12 to 10, Independents 3 to 2, and the Northern Territory CLP (Coalition) 1 to 0.
Figures from the Electoral Commission show that In New England, Mr. Windsor polled 44,940 votes. His nearest rival was the Nationals Phil Betts, with 16,649 votes,then Country Labor’s Luke Brand,7,080, The Greens Bruce Taylor 2,344, One Nation Brian Dettmann 858, then Citizens Electoral Council candidate, Richard Witten 187.
