Your Chance to be a Star

June 2, 2017

The 2017 Bingara Regional Australia Bank Bingara Orange festival will be held on Saturday 1st July. ‘The street parade is always a highlight of the festival and we hope to make it bigger and better each year. To do this we need as many floats as possible to enter and we encourage all community groups to participate; it is also a great way for groups to promote their organisation’ said Catherine Egan, Chair of the Bingara Special Events Committee.

The theme of the festival and the parade this year will be ‘‘Happy Days’ celebrating the nostalgia of the 50’s and 60’s. The possibilities for this theme are endless, and festival organisers are looking forward to seeing plenty of Elvis and Fonzie impersonators as well as characters from Grease, hot rods and rock n roll dancers.

As in past years, due to insurance restrictions, parade participants will not be allowed to ride on the backs of moving vehicles such as flat-bed trailers. ‘Unfortunately this is a condition of the parade that is being dictated by Council’s insurer, and to do so would render the CTP Green slip for the driver void. This limitation does restrict the types of floats that can be entered, but it is in place to ensure the safety of all participants.

We cannot have anything untoward happen; we are a small community and we want to keep everyone safe’ said Georgia Standerwick, Marketing and Promotions Team Leader for Gwydir Shire Council. ‘Larger places such as Sydney and Tamworth have sufficient funds to pay exorbitant insurance premiums to cover the cost of this activity, but we don’t have that luxury. Although at first glance this may seem like it takes the fun out of the parade, we are encouraging participants to think outside of the box.

Displays on trucks, costumes, puppets or decorated vehicles are just some of the ways groups can add colour and movement to their entry’ ‘There are some fantastic examples of ‘Rock n Roll themed floats on our ‘Bingara Gem of the Gwydir’ Facebook page that are not on backs of trucks to help people get inspired’ said Georgia.
