$1.5 million to build Community and Sporting facilities in Gwydir Shire

March 14, 2018

In 2017, the NSW Government established the Stronger Country Communities Fund. The objective of this fund is to help deliver local infrastructure projects to regional communities. The distribution of the funds is over two rounds.

Gwydir Shire is awaiting an announcement as to which projects were successful in Round 1 and is now calling for applications for Round 2 funding.

In Round 1 Council gave priority to the upgrade of the Warialda Memorial Hall, the upgrade of the Bingara Swimming Pool, the construction of an amenities block at the Coolatai Sports Grounds and the construction of the Bingara Central School Basketball Cover following extensive community consultation.

This week, Round 2 opened and Council is seeking projects from our community. In Round 2 a total of $200 million is available across regional NSW. The fund will support projects for

  • construction of new or refurbishment/upgrade of existing community infrastructure such as community halls, playgrounds, or toilet blocks
  • construction of new or refurbishment/upgrade of existing local sporting infrastructure such as change-room facilities, walking and cycle pathways, public pool upgrades, indoor sports facilities or oval/court lighting
  • capital works related to street beautification and public ‘place making’ such as murals, planter boxes or town and tourism signage.

The minimum grant amount is $50,000 per project.

“The fund is also more flexible than ever before. Refreshed guidelines will allow smaller projects and urban beautification works, while 50 per cent of the funding is guaranteed to head towards sporting infrastructure,” Member for Northern Tablelands, Adam Marshall said.

Mr Marshall encouraged community groups across the Shire to consider what was needed in their area.
