BINGARA ENTERS 2009 TIDY TOWNS COMPETITION

May 23, 2009

VISION 20/20 are pleased to enter Bingara in this year’s Tidy Towns Awards. The entry has been submitted for the overall category for towns between 1,201 and 4,000 population, and in the Cultural Heritage Award section for the Discover Gwydir Forum #1 held at the Roxy Theatre in March.

President, Rick Hutton said it was an honour to submit the entry on behalf of the town. “The beauty of Bingara is admired by many, but it is the dynamic drive of our town, that has set it apart. This has led to the ongoing appreciation and interest in its physical attractiveness and its community spirit.”

Last year Bingara entered in the overall section and in the Energy Efficiency Award which it won with the entry for the Regenerative Energy for Rural Communities Forum held in July.

“VISION 20/20 believes that it is appropriate that it submit the entry this year rather than rely on Gwydir Shire Council to do it.” Rick said. “We invite other community organizations to get behind our entry and provide support in the form of information to be included in our town submission.”

The submission is due by June 11, so any information that can be added to the entry will be welcomed promptly. Sporting clubs, service clubs, businesses, school entries and any other community organization that would like to have their activities and projects included in the overall entry can direct them to V20/20 at PO Box 222, Bingara, or drop them in to Fays or the GSC Bingara Office.

The Cultural Heritage Award relates to “community projects that enhance and protect the heritage character of a feature or group of features and the preservation of Australian culture”.

The Discover Gwydir Forum #1 was the first of three Forums planned and supported by GSC, V20/20 and the Warialda Tourism Group, to identify and enhance tourist and recreation opportunities across the Shire.

“I hope that Warialda makes a similar submission for Discover Gwydir #2 which they hosted in April.” Rick Hutton said. “The Tidy Towns Awards this year will be held in Tamworth which won both the NSW and Australian overall Tidy Town Award for 2008.”
