First year a ‘corker’ for Gwydir League amalgamated team

August 15, 2013

Gwydir made the trip to Uralla last Saturday and returned home with one winning team and one losing team.

The Oz Tag side were defeated by a much better team on the day, with Uralla having claimed the Minor Premiership. Gwydir played well, but were ultimately beaten by a score line of 60 points to nil.

Full credit to Gwydir as they played with only 10 members of their team and they all tried their hearts out.

Best player points went to Kearni Churchland (3 points), Melissa Molloy (2 points) and Codie Ryan (1 point). Kearnie Churchland also received 1 point from the referee. This team will be better for their next season. They are very keen and they can only get better for the 2014 season.

Well done girls. You have done Gwydir proud.

What a game was had by Sam Cooper, who scored a double, and was unanimously named as the player’s player.

Another one who impressed was winger Shaun Fletcher who also picked up two tries. The game was a real see-saw affair, with Gwydir staying in the hunt, to go to a half time break behind by18-12.

The go-forward man was Andrew McClymont, who rattled Uralla’s forwards with his huge hits and he created havoc when he ran the ball.

Just 3 minutes into the 2nd half M Clymont scored, and just how good is Rocky Hall? The ball travelled sweetly for him and the flags went up to level the score at 18 all.

Gwydir then made some simple errors, dropping the ball over the dead ball line.

However, the players rallied and one of the best tries of the day came from a Harold Duncan break which gave Shaun Fletcher the first of his double. Gwydir ahead 24-18.

It was now Sam Cooper to take control. He stepped up his intensity and pulled off many try saving tackles. From this point on it was all Gwydir, or so we thought, but a gift penalty to Uralla saw them close the gap to within four points.

Gwydir 28 Uralla 24. It was Uralla coming home the better, and another quick try saw them take the lead 30-28. The game was over, Uralla was jubilant, but with one minute on the clock Same Cooper scored the winning try. Gwydir 32 Uralla 30. Referees points went to McClymont 3, number 2 for Uralla, and Jack Faint 1 point.

Club points went to Sam Cooper (3points) Andrew McClymont and Shaun Fletcher equal on 2 points and Steve Calman 1 point.

See you at the footy next Sunday. It will be a great day, not only for the players, but for all those people who have stuck resolute behind our historic merger.

It must be recognised that without our supporters and fans from our very own Shire and towns, we would not have been able to keep Rugby League alive in our area. So from the club, committee and players we all thank you for your support.
