Fish are hungry, but Anglers more hungry for a big catch

April 16, 2011

Although the Gwydir River is very low at the moment, it “does not seem to worry the fish, because there have been a few caught”, according to Bingara Anglers Club spokesman, Stuart Lanagan.

The Anglers Club annual Easterfish Competition will be held from Good Friday until 3pm on Sunday, April 24.

Fish can be weighed in at the Bingara Murray cod Hatchery on Good Friday from 2pm to 4pm, on Easter Saturday from 8am to 3pm, and on Sunday from 9am to 3pm when the gate closes and results announced.

Fish can also be weighed in at the Copeton Dam Scout Hall on Good Friday from 2pm to 4pm, Easter Saturday 8am to 3pm, and on the Sunday, from 8am to 11am.

Fishing can be carried out in the Gwydir River from Copeton Dam to the Junction of the Horton River, all of the Horton River, and Copeton Dam.  Catfish are to be caught and weighed in at Copeton Dam only.

The cod, Stuart says, are hungry. The weed currently in the river won’t stop the fish, just present minor inconvenience for the fishermen.

“As usual, there is strong interest from Pallamallawa. They always send a big team, and do a great job running the weigh in of fish at Copeton for us,” Stuart said.

Fish weighed in must not be gutted, scaled or gilled, and the secret weight wll be disclosed at the presentation of trophies on Sunday, April 24.
