Former Gwydir Councillors honoured

Former Councillors Mark Coulton, MP, John Wearne AM, and Doug Clark were honoured at a function held at the Roxy Theatre recently.Unfortunately, Mr. Clark, who served for 12 years, firstly on Yallaroi Council and later on Gwydir Shire Council,  was unable to attend.

Speakers included the Mayor, Bob Tremain, who spoke about the achievements of his former colleagues, Member for New England, Tony Windsor MP, and Member for Northern Tablelands, Richard Torbay MP.

President of the NSW Shires Association, Cr. Bruce Miller, said many people who serve in local government go on to represent in either State or Federal parliament, or in the higher levels of Local Government organisations.   Cr. Miller said that Councillors take pride in their own communities, none more so that John Wearne.  His comments were endorsed by Mr. Mike Silver who described John Wearne as a ‘cricket tragic’. Mr. silver served with John on the North West Cricket Council and the board of Arts North West.

Cr. Catherine Egan spoke of her term on Gwydir with Mark Coulton. “Mark became Mayor, set the bar high, and hit the ground running”, she said.

Other speakers included current Councillors Doering and Caskey.
