Memories that last a lifetime

May 18, 2015

Ninety-three year old Doris Smyth (nee Withers) had a chance to reminisce on her childhood days recently when her daughter took her up to see the Upper Bingara School for the 100 year centenary.

Doris was born and raised with her family of nine brothers and one sister on the property Bellvue, Barraba Road, Bingara. She attended Upper Bingara School with Mr Young as teacher 85 years ago. The children would ride their horses up over the serpentine mountain to get to school each day.

When they visited the school, Doris remembered where she would tie the horse up in the school grounds and hang her bag on the hooks on the back verandah.

Doris enjoyed her outing to Upper Bingara and was pleased to share her memories of school life in the 1920s with her family.
