New boating ramp for Bingara’s anglers

January 24, 2011

A new $21,000 boating ramp will make it easier for Bingara’s anglers to launch their boats onto the Gwydir River, Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay has announced.

The funding through the state Better Boating Program will enable Gwydir Council to build the new concrete ramp upstream of Campbell’s Bridge.

“With the flow of the river regulated by releases from Copeton Dam it makes it difficult for anglers to launch their boats, particularly when the water supply is low,” Mr Torbay said.  “This new ramp will reduce that problem and make it possible to launch boats regardless of the height of the river.”

More than 100 people belong to the popular and active Bingara Anglers Club which organises many events each year including weekend camps for fathers and sons and family outings.

Each year members breed Murray Cod and Golden Perch fingerlings to release into the Gwydir River and Copeton Dam  to enhance the sport.

“It’s great to see this improvement to the facilities available and it opens up more opportunities for local people to participate,” Mr Torbay said.

The new ramp is expected to be completed for the start of the Murray Cod fishing season in December.
